The Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant is responsible, in coordination with the Perioperative Leadership, for developing and coordinating the day to day clinical operations to assure a smooth, efficient function in the Surgical Suites and the delivery of quality healthcare in the pre, intra, and postoperative units. The Physician Assistant, under the direction and responsibility of the attending physician, will provide surgical first assistance during the inpatient operative surgeries including the functions of retract, suction, sponge, clamp, tie and harvesting and cauterizing vessels adhering to strict aseptic techniques. In addition, the Physician Assistant will be screening patients to determine the needs for medical attention, reviewing patient records to determine health status, taking patient history, performing physical examination, and recording pertinent patient data. Dictates notes for consultations and progress notes with accuracy and efficiency as appropriate per patient. Participates in rounds with the surgeon pre or post-operatively and will assist with the management and coordination of care as appropriate. During emergency situations, the Physician Assistant will be initiating appropriate evaluation and therapy.




Graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant Program


Graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant program or baccalaureate or higher degree program that meets licensure requirements in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required




Minimum of 2 years of cardiac surgery operating room first assistant experience required


Possess a solid medical knowledge base for cardiopulmonary crucial care medicine with an interest in congenital cardiac anomalies


Possess critical thinking skills and adaptability to the cardiac surgery service line


Communication skills to work collaboratively with medical and surgical colleagues, staff and orientees


Successful completion of endovascular vein harvesting program with at least 2 years clinical experience




Current license as a Physician Assistant in the State


Current American Heart Association BLS Certification
