The Deputy Director, NIMHD serves as the second-in-command for the Institute, assisting the Director in managing a staff of approximately 86 FTEs and a budget of $314 million.  He/she is primarily responsible for implementation of the Institute’s Strategic Plan and management of the Institute’s daily operations. The Deputy Director aids the Director as a champion and guarantor of the intellectual and administrative environment at the Institute and serves as an ambassador and spokesperson in the absence of the Director. More specifically, the Deputy Director has ultimate authority and oversight for the entire organization including both the Scientific and Administrative components. He/she chairs multiple Institute working groups, oversees evaluations of external and internal programs, and helps coordinate multiple trans-institute activities.  He/she represents the NIMHD Director in NIH-wide, DHHS, and other federal governmental scientific task forces, meetings, and working groups. The Deputy Director, NIMHD provides advice to the Director on major extramural policy issues and initiatives affecting minority health and health disparities research and the NIH. Maintains current knowledge of NIH extramural research policies and procedures and continually identifies potential areas of concern or improvement for further consideration by the Director, NIMHD.  He/she maintains knowledge of and identifies current and emerging issues, including Congressional concerns and external policy setting activities in other agencies within and outside the Federal government that may affect the NIMHD and NIH, in addition to monitoring the effects of national policy changes on research activities.

Requirements

The NIMHD at NIH seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization.  Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. and have senior-level research experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to minority health and health disparities.  Applicants must be a leader who is experienced in giving presentations nationally to broad audiences, including researchers, policymakers, and the general public.  They should be known and respected within their discipline, both nationally and internationally, as individuals of outstanding scientific competence.  Applicants also must have demonstrated experience in setting, planning, implementing and analyzing program objectives and priorities. Candidates should have the demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources and coordinate a research portfolio involving extensive internal and external collaboration.
