General Summary StatementTo provide childbirth education classes and maternity unit tours to expectant parents and their families during their childbearing years. Primary role is that of a classroom/group educator. Instructor is expected to work as one of a team of educators and participate in curriculum revisions, staff meetings and information updates as required. The Childbirth Educator works cooperatively with the Manager of the Childbirth Education Program.Essential Duties and Responsibilities¢\tIdentifies the learning needs of clients and adapts class information while utilizing a variety of teaching methodologies in accordance with the current policies and procedures of the Hospital.¢\tCreates an interactive learning environment that facilitates verbal exchange between clients/instructor during class; provides opportunities for return demonstration of learned techniques and is available to clients before and after class to provide information and support. ¢\tEmpowers clients to be self sustaining by demonstrating a variety of tools and techniques, and observes return demonstrations of coping tools for various stages of labor, birth and parenting.¢\tPresents the teaching material in a clear, organized, accurate, and unbiased fashion based on the approved written class curriculum.¢\tApplies adult learning principles to their clients/customers in order to assistant them in preparing for childbirth and their role as new parents.¢\tArrives for class with sufficient time to have materials organized and classroom seating arranged in a manner that meets the identified needs of the class.¢\tSets up, operates ands troubleshoots audiovisual equipment¢\tAt the class conclusion, replaces all materials in proper storage location and notifies the program manager of any supply needs, equipment failure or facility needs noted during class.¢\tMarks attendance on class roster, and submits roster to program manager at the end of class for data collection.¢\tCollects class evaluation forms at the conclusion of the class and submits these forms to program manager for data collection.¢\tUtilizes feedback received from class evaluation forms as an opportunity for growth and improvement in teaching skills as needed.¢\tCommunicates expressed patient concerns in a confidential manner to the program manager.¢\tObserves facility rules and regulations at each teaching site with regard to safety and security.¢\tSupports team approach by attending staff meetings, curriculum review meetings and by adhering to program curriculum with deviations occurring only when learner needs require the teaching of alternative material¢\tAssists in reviewing, assessing and updating curriculum and teaching material as needed.¢\tDemonstrates creative thinking and problem solving and knows when to seek appropriate consultation.¢\tFollows Hospital and departmental rules and policies.¢\tKeeps in-services, training and credentials current and is competent in teaching skills as it relates to this position.¢\tParticipates in continuing education programs and shares new information with faculty to enhance the educational program.¢\tAssists in orienting new childbirth staff by taking on the role of preceptor.¢\tPromotes the Hospitals Maternal-Child Services when interacting with clients.

Education Training and Experience\n•\tCurrent PA License as a Registered Nurse\n•\t2-3 years experience in Maternal-Child Nursing\n•\tExcellent public speaking and instructional skills required\n•\tExperience teaching in group setting preferred\n•\tBSN preferred\n•\tCertification preferred (must obtain within 1 year of employment)\n\nLicensure/Certification \n•\tCurrent PA License as a Registered Nurse\n•\tChildbirth Certification preferred\n•\tCurrent CPR Certification\n\nIBCLC required\n\nWork Environment and Hazards\n•\tClassroom or similar space suitable for instruction\n\nWork Contact Group\n•\tClients/Customers\n•\tPregnant women and labor partners\n•\tSiblings ages 3yrs-7yrs\n•\tCommunity Members\n•\tCo-workers
